Burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - to produce electricity emits carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere where it builds up, blankets the earth and traps in heat, causing changes to the global climate. Coal-fired electricity generation is the single biggest source of CO2 pollution worldwide. CO2 is also produced when natural gas is burned, for example for home heating and in industrial facilities. Other greenhouse gases include methane, CFC's (ozone depleting chemicals) and nitrous oxides. |
